MEET OUR PEOPLE

Our staff are our greatest assets. We encourage their growth and support them to achieve all our care goals. Te Hopai is proud to have many staff who have worked for the organisation for over 10 years. The developed skills, continuity and caring attention to detail makes Te Hopai a true ‘home’ environment.

Staff are rostered carefully to ensure that there are maximum numbers of staff at key times (such as breakfast and morning showering). This rostering allows staff to take their time attending to every resident’s personal daily needs in a relaxed manner. Staff are encouraged to spend time talking and getting to know everyone in their care, building deep relationships that support well-being and happiness.

Mike Smith

Mike is Chairperson of the Te Hopai Home and Hospital Board. He has worked for over 30 years in the community/not-for-profit sector. He is a chartered accountant and has held leadership roles with several organizations including Cancer Society Wellington, Caritas Aotearoa NZ and NZ Red Cross. He currently works with a Catholic charity called the Society of Mary (Marist) New Zealand. He is married to Helen and they have 3 teenage children. Mike joined the Board of Te Hopai in 2022 and was appointed Chairperson in October 2025.

Masako Crawford

My name is Masako Crawford originally from Japan. I taught Japanese and English as a second language at Massey University before my retirement. My interests were language learning strategies and intercultural communication. I am married with two children and four grandchildren.

The Hospital wing was just completed when I joined the team of Te Hopai trustees and I have seen Te Hopai emerge from an excellent but small operation to the present 151-bed modern facility. I am always impressed by the fact that management and the staff know all the residents by name and their backgrounds.

 

Since my retirement I joined the Kaibosh team as a community outreach of St Paul’s Lutheran Church in Newtown. Every Friday morning I have the pleasure of carrying a car full of groceries for 35-40 Te Hopai caregivers in need of extra help due to the high cost of living in the capital. It is a pleasure to see first hand how staff work efficiently and are caring for each other.

I am honored to be a part of the Te Hopai community.

Mark Rowe

Mark is Chairperson of the Te Hopai Finance and Audit Committee. He is a chartered accountant who was previously employed by Ernst & Young for more than 20 years including the role of secretary to the Board of Te Hopai from 2002 to 2007. He has worked with numerous for-purpose organizations including as General Manager Corporate Services for IHC for ten years and latterly in governance roles. Mark is very happily married to Margie, his bridge partner since 2002. He has been on the Board of Te Hopai since 2007.

Andrea McCance

Trustee
 

Andrea joined the Te Hopai board in 2020. She is an experienced board director and health sector leader with governance and executive experience spanning Wellington and Melbourne. A registered nurse by background, she has held senior executive roles including Director of Nursing and Midwifery at Eastern Health in Melbourne and Capital Coast District Health Board, Wellington. She brings to the board particular governance strengths in clinical quality, patient safety, risk management & financial oversight. In NZ, she has served as a trustee and chair of Mary Potter Hospice and is a current member of the NZ Red Cross national council.

Cheryl Goodyer

Ngāti Raukawa, Ngāti Ranginui

Cheryl Goodyer (Ngāti Raukawa, Ngāti Ranginui) is a senior Māori health leader with extensive professional and clinical leadership experience across regulatory, advisory, service delivery and capability building roles in the health sector. She has led and supported systemwide approaches to improving outcomes for Māori, including culturally safe workforce development, patient and whānau-centred service design, and continuous quality improvement. She currently works with the Nursing Council of New Zealand as Principal Advisor Māori, supporting the organization’s focus on equity and culturally safe care.

Outside of work, Cheryl enjoys the grounding and balance that comes from being close to nature and spending time with her whānau.

Cheryl joined the Te Hopai Board in 2022.

Anna Davison

Anna is a long-term associate GP at Newlands Medical Centre in Wellington where she has worked since 2006. She has a wide interest in all aspects of family medicine and has postgraduate diplomas in paediatrics and obstetrics and gynaecology. She has been a tutor in medical student training and has been extensively involved in her community as a volunteer at her children's schools and sports teams. 

She is relishing the opportunity at contributing to the Te Hopai board and all it's challenges going forward.
